Angie and Pat have been together for over four decades, but after Pat’s unexpected death, Angie finds herself at the mercy of Pat’s family as she struggles to preserve her dignity and the home they’ve shared for over thirty years. Angie and Pat have been together for decades and have just hosted a fall holiday dinner for Pat’s biological family, who are less financially secure than Pat. The younger generation fondly calls her “Aunt Angie.” However, when Pat dies in her sleep, Pat’s family views Angie as a “friend” below the family, ignoring her wishes and gradually pushing her out. Their lawyer friend points out all of Pat’s faults and failings. Refusing to sign a will (Pat is considering starting a new fashion retail business rather than accepting the possibility of death), Pat’s brother is the executor. By not leaving written funeral instructions, the biological family assumes responsibility. By not marrying abroad, Angie has no moral standing and little legal standing that such a document would provide. Having the apartment in Pat’s name simply means that Angie has no rights. The best Angie can do is claim dependent benefits from the property. While Angie loses battle after battle, it is her chosen family who provide her with emotional support. It is supposedly based on true events and depicts the problems of infidelity. Films on this topic appeared in North America a decade or two ago, but the problems largely stopped when same-sex marriage became legal. This is a reminder that the fight for rights must continue, but before rights can be established, legal issues must be resolved.
