MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy that follows the journey of Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), an American Army veteran in Afghanistan, who clashes with her family over the presence of her deceased best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales), in the military. Despite the persistence of the VA team counselor (Morgan Freeman), the strong love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the ease of unexpected love, Merritt and Zoe’s cozy-but-dysfunctional friendship isolates the pair from the world. That is, until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), who lives in the family’s old lake house, begins to feel lost and needs the one thing he doesn’t want to give up: help. At its core, it’s a companion film about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways of dealing with grief.
