In the midst of an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, is given a high-profile job she’s ill-suited for, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future. The producers convinced both the American and British governments to allow them to use real-life locations as filming locations for the series, including the still-recent American embassy (at Nine Elms, a nod to any film or film production, especially an American one).
The only location that was unavailable was Winfield House, the current residence of the American ambassador
Although it’s accurately described as occupying the largest residential plot (11 acres) in London outside of Buckingham Palace, the producers used a country house outside the city for filming. I have to admit, I wasn’t planning on watching The Diplomat, but after hearing so many great things about it and reading all the great reviews, I thought I’d give it a shot.
I was hooked from the first episode
I’m so glad I did it because it was great. I’m actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
I could definitely see this series winning some awards
Even though Keri Russell was great in The Americans, I thought it was more about the writing than her acting, so I wasn’t sure if she and Rufus Sewell could carry the series as the lead, but absolutely, they’re both fantastic here. The chemistry between these two is what makes this show so good.
